A cold, wet, gloomy November day greets the Rock Island and its commuters at La Salle Street Station, Chicago as E8 649 and another E wait for their next assignment. In addition to running commuter trains, Rock Island had not joined Amtrak and was required to run a Peoria and Quad Cities Rocket pair daily. The gloom pretty well predicts the outlook for this Midwestern granger road.
