Two operating characteristics epitomise the West Country class of Pacifics designed by Oliver Bulleid of the Southern Railway. The fierce exhaust, often referred to as 'volcanic' and a reputation for being less than sure-footed when starting. The first was well in evidence as can be seen here, of the second there wasn't a trace. The climb out of Keighley begins with a sharp right hand curve on an extremely stiff climb out of the town. This requires an excellent driving technique and today's crew showed consummate skill.
