Up the hill to McGill. Leaving Ely behind, a Nevada Northern mixed freight headed by 10-wheeler #40 crosses the big fill at Steptoe Creek, on the way north to McGill. To ensure a smooth trip up the hill, a pusher has been added to the tail end of the consist, with Consolidation #93 doing the honors today. Historical photos appear to show that the original Nevada Northern did indeed operate this way when sending heavy freights up the Hiline, and on the 2015 Winter Photo Shoots, the Nevada Northern Railway Museum was excited at the prospect of being able to re-create this type of train for the cameras. After several years of work, the museum folks have been able to get all of the historic freight cars re-certified for operations out on the main line, and the result was a very impressive train that looked good and sounded great as well.
