Tough winter day on the Kyle—1 After a late December storm buried parts of western Kansas in over 30 inches of snow, the railroads of the region had tough going. Union Pacific operated a rotary snowplow west to Sharon Springs on the “Kansas Pacific” Limon Subdivision on January 1, 2007. Early the next day, Kyle, with fewer “big guns” to fight snow, dispatched a wedge plow west out of Colby, Kansas. In this view, Kyle plow MWK 06 (former Santa Fe) is pushed along by two CEFX EMD SD45T-2s, still in nice Southern Pacific paint, just west of Colby. With winter approaching, I thought it might be fun to look a series of images of Kyle battling the elements on a tough winter day in western Kansas…
