She's so fine my 409! Well, not this particular 409. A UP SD24 was switching a box car at a freight station in Salt Lake City when it broke down right where you see it. The unit sat for weeks until it was repaired. The 409 was built by EMD for the UP in Aug. 1959 and retired in Oct. 1980. By 1984 it was scrapped by Chrome Crankshaft of Chicago. The EMD SD24 series didn't lead the charmed life of its successor, the SD40. |
