Abandon - Located in the Sonoran Desert in Southern most part of Anza Borego State Park (San Diego County) the gorge is a geological wonder indeed. The desert line that runs through the Carizzo Gorge between El Centro and San Diego was called the "impossible railroad" when construction began in 1906. The line opened in 1919 and ran for many years in spite of earthquakes, fires and hurricanes that brought torrential rains and flooding. This line has been under an embargo order and there has not been regularly scheduled traffic on the line since since 2008.
