Here's one of my favorite images of the Southern Pacific Railroad from the early 1990s. For a short time, before the hundreds of new and rebuilt units arrived from MPI, GE and EMD, the SP was in the market to lease power in the short term. The second section of SP's Roseville to Grand Junction freight is powered by a relatively new Cotton Belt GP60, a rare Santa Fe B36-7, three SP B30-7s, a leased EMD GP40 and a leased Santa Fe C30-7 in 'SPSF' Kodachrome paint! The Santa Fe 7495 would return to Utah in Oct. 2007, painted for the new shortline Savage Bingham & Garfield Railroad as SVGX 3612.
Crazy pool power consists, colorful gatherings of locomotives at a diesel service area, or a mixture of colorful locomotives in storage lines. A minimum of four different paint schemes required.
