One of my favorite railfan locations in Pennsylvania is Mexico, MP 148 on NS's Middle Division, three miles east of Port Royal. It has all the things a visiting railfan would enjoy: Good views for trains, signals, a defect detector, but most of all, a great backdrop. Eastbound trains can be heard blowing for small crossings to the west, while westbounds can be heard working their way along the Juanita River. On the evening of the longest day of the year, stack train 21T breaks the calm silence as it thunders westbound with a nice former Conrail SD60 on the point. Once the train clears, the quietness takes over again, allowing me to return to my vehicle to enjoy a book and wait for the next train.
