| Brian Stephenson's superb series of recent postings of images by the late Kenneth Field include a wonderful photograph of a freight train headed by an ex-LNWR 0-8-0 taken just a few hundred yards east of this location. On this perfect March morning in 2006, the expected train was in celebration of the 175th anniversary of the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway. It was bitterly cold with barely a breath of wind. An overnight snow shower had laced the Pennine hills with a magical coating of white as I and several dozen others waited in almost unbearable anticipation. I will never forget the unmistakeable sound of the two steam locomotives approaching at speed, their appearance around the distant curve and the unbearably long wait (film!) that I had indeed captured what I had just witnessed. The finest sight I have ever seen in preservation. |
