Members of the American Freedom Train's crew pose next to engine 4449's tender while the train is on display in Anaheim, California, on January 13, 1976. From left to right are: Left to right: Roy McCormack (engineer Doyle's father), Craig Thomas, Tom Nosera, Al Philips, Andy Adams, and Doyle McCormack. Doyle, Al and Andy - along with Russ Shipman and (not in photo) - were instrumental in the former Southern Pacific 4-8-4's restoration, maintanence and operation while the Freedom Train toured most of the country in 1975-1976. (A Reading T-1 pulled the train in the northeast, and T&P 610 got the honors in much of Texas.) Craig and Tom (and Russ Sperry, also not pictured) were long-term volunteers on the crew. These guys pulled off a feat many thought was impossible - to restore and operate a large steam locomotive for nearly two years around the country, with no steam facilities (for fuel, water and repairs) available. Well done, gentlemen! And thanks for the memories.
Displays of American pride, and spirit! Equipment painted Red, White, and Blue! With an honored salute and tribute to our veterans and troops added too! Patriots can still be found to join this gathering of Patriotic Pride!
