Back when they were new in the early 1990s, Amtrak's Dash 8-32BWH diesels hauling Horizon Fleet and Amfleet cars on the San Diegans was the norm. But since the delivery of dedicated Pacific Surfliner equipment (F59PHIs and high-level coaches, along with a name change for these trains) in 1998, this older equipment was used sparingly. But with recent schedule changes, some of these older trainsets have been pressed back into daily service, providing some variety on the California coast. On March 3, 2012, Pacific Surfliner #572 departs Fullerton behind Dash 8-32BWH 507 (wearing its third paint scheme) for its trip to San Diego.
