High in the Cascade Mountains on Union Pacific’s Cascade Subdivision, the Amtrak Coast Starlight train 14 gingerly snakes its way down the 1.7% grade at 20 mph through ‘the slide’ at Fields.
Railroad workers have been forced to move this stretch of rails a handful of times because it is notorious for sliding down the mountain. Cinder ballast is used here for its exceptional interlocking qualities.
