Due to the idling of the Ontonagon Smurfit-Stone mill and ongoing friction between the company and the railroad, the removal of the boxcars from the west side of the river on November 21, 2009 could very well be the last cars switched out of the Ontonagon mill. Some storage cars remain in the yard on the east side of the river. The future of railroading in this town on Lake Superior's south shore is very uncertain.
