Remarks & Notes |
A Seward bound freight nears the 20 Mile River bridge and Whittier junction. This train features a slug of traffic for Whittier which will be set off at Portage before the train makes a turn over the mountain to Seward and back before ultimately tying up for the night in Whittier. The dead trees flanking the train were essentially pickled over four decades earlier when the devastating Good Friday earthquake in 1964 instantly dropped the land around portage more than eight feet. That act put the trees roots below the water table and they gradually absorbed the tidal salt water and died...yet the salt has remarkably preserved them so they stand as nature's silent reminder. |
