| Railroading in Eastern NC is far from glamorous or exciting. East of I-95 it’s all branchline running with long portions of track which see service just 2-5 days a week or only at night. Finding a train running in decent light can be difficult and frustrating. But somehow, this region – with its friendly crews who leave their trains on the “mainline” to wander over to a greasy spoon and its monotonous flat fields and swamps sprinkled with tiny communities – begins to grow on you, and the idea of trundling locals instead of speeding stacks doesn’t sound all that bad after all. |
