483's train is made up and inspected before departing South Janesville for the Twin Cities. Today's power is #837 with sisters 810 & 823, pulling 27 cars, loads that included motor-carrier brand names from the past. Coincidentally, the scheduled freight train was actually named "The Chief" in the CNW employee timetable, a common practice on that RR. Other second-class scheduled westbound freights over the Madison sub were named "The Forester" (281), "The Northwest" (479), and "The Iroquois" (495); eastbounds were "The Mohawk" (484), "The Spartan" (482), and "The Sunbeam" (490). Most freights became "extras" in the age of track warrants and DTC.
