| Mist from the Monongahela River shrouds the valley as an eastbound train rolls through. Homestead, site of a major US Steel factory and famous for periodic labor unrest, has been reduced to ruins in the form of smokestacks. While the stacks remain as a tribute to a period of expansion in American manufacturing, they've been supplanted by a massive shopping complex. It's a tribute to America's new driving economic force - consumerism. |
