| Benxi steelworks is set on a broad open plain ringed by hills. It is almost unimaginably huge by any standards, extending as far as the eye could see. Expansion of the complex was continuing at a colossal rate and in 2004 the internal rail system was served by a fleet of some 30 SY's. Elderly electrics also plied the outer perimeters where the catenary did not compromise safety. The volcanic-looking 'hill' in the background is possibly the most gigantic spoil heap on the planet! |
