This shot could have easily been taken in 1956 instead of 2006. These locomotives are part of the collection ot fhe Pacific Locomotive Association and operate on the Niles Canyon Railway.

The Portola museum train emerges from Tunnel 4 and takes the siding at James. Moments later, it would meet a westbound UP stack train.

It was now late in the afternoon, and the number of railfans chasing the train dwindled to five or so, down from maybe thirty when the train left Roseville.
