On a brisk winter morning, Union Pacific 5401 comes rumbling through the orchards located just south of Durham, California along the UP Valley Subdivision.
The daily San Jose to Roseville manifest takes a little detour up the old ex-Southern Pacific Mulford Line, on its way to Roseville.

I followed UP 5401's train down the mountain from Marcel to Edison, and I had the good fortune of capturing it at the north switch for Allard Siding in fantastic evening light.
A descending UP manifest, displaying a nice mix of GE & EMD power, is going in the hole at the south end of Woodford siding to allow one southbound.
I was fortunate to catch this westbound train descending the pass before heading back to the Bay Area. The evening light at several spots, including Bena as seen here, was fantastic.
