Slowly following Amtrak, this westbound coal empty slowly rolls along the S-Curve between Tolland and East Portal.

It's late in the afternoon as Amtrak #6, the California Zephyr, emerges from the East Portal of the Moffat Tunnel as they meet a westbound Lincoln, NE to Provo, UT BNSF Manifest.

A few signs of the fall colors remain as an eastbound coal train snakes its way east. As the leaves disappear the first signs of the coming winter are beginning to appear on the peaks above.

High country blizzard
During a windy and frigid springtime snowstorm, a Rio Grande coal train approaches the Moffat Tunnel at East Portal, Colorado.

As a light snow comes down, a westbound empty hopper train is about to enter the east portal of Moffat Tunnel for the 6.2 mile ride to the other side of the mountain.
