SP had a lot of success with various rebuilds and wanted to see what could be done with the 68 U25B's purchased in the early 1969's. Various electrical upgrades (hence "U45 BE") were made and I recall the units worked well but the rebuilding cost was deemed too expensive to continue. 6800 and 6801 spent much of their time in Taylor - West Colton service and I recall their much louder exhaust sound when passing Dayton Avenue Tower. This unit happy still exists and operates at the Southern California Railway Museum in Perris.
