Back in 1971, Beech Grove was where former NYC and PRR cars that were not elected by Amtrak went to die. The local railfans were well connected with the officials and the yard crews, and we helped ourselves to fittings and odds and ends from the cars going to scrap. The same group of fans also saved a number of the cars, which were available for sale at what were then dirt cheap scrap prices.
