Much has changed in the years since this photo was taken. The tower still exists and the 16th street station building and upper level platforms for the IER are still there (although crumbling), but the tracks and signals are gone - a result of the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989. But who knows about those F units? They could be soldiering on for some short line, tourist operation or whatever.

@Nuc, according to an entry for 6456 on railgoat.railfan.net, it was sold back to EMD in April 1976 and subsequently scrapped by Pielet Brothers in LaGrange, IL. However, it doesn't cite a source for that information, so take it with a grain of salt.

F units forever. They were the face of railroads back in the day. Rugged looking and ready for a break after getting into Oakland these units really look as tuff as old beef jerky. Super shot Robert. 6456 you rock.
