Classic locale off N side of US highway No.2 near M/p 1151.85 on then-BN’s Seattle Region Montana Division 2nd subdivision No.2 (S) main w/“Marias” about 2/5 mi.(650-m) ahead-of lead “GeeP”s pilot there. Havre - Whitefish local No.603 usually ran @ night, dep. former ?round 8P-MT, although crew/power availabilities occasionally “messed-up” that routine. Little Dog (to Lt., el. 8,610 ft.; 2,624+m) and Summit (el. 8,770 ft.; 2,673+m) Mtn.s make the dramatic backdrop on the Continental Divide along the S side of Glacier National Park. The light-colored band of rock about 2/3 up their slopes indicating the “overthrust belt” (in Glacier National Park it’s referred-to as the “Lewis overthrust”) wherein rocks above are Precambrian Belt shales well-over a billion years old while those below are Cretaceous sedimentaries (the grey-white band being Madison formation limestones) of 100 to 65 million years’ age – the “rafting-over” process of the upper and older formations occurred during the more-recent period’s latter part.
