I had a nice discussion last month at The Station Inn with a gentleman about all the Manifest traffic back in the Conrail days and how much seems to have gone. Almost seemed like an endless parade from the eastern points headed to Conway and/or Elkhart.

Some of it gone to containers, a lot of it gone to mismanagement and sending shippers to trucking with cavalier service and disruptions. Witness UP and its extraordinarily low traffic levels (coal and combined trains notwithstanding). It's just easier to manage when you don't have much left to manage but numbers. NS did this following the CR merger.
