A lot to look at and think about in these photographs of the Milwaukee Road. What could have been and what actually happened. I've just noticed from Mr. Jordan's photos that the units seem to have one of the cabs blanked out. Had always thought that they were bi-directional units. Also, what's with the missing door on the nose? Difficult to believe, for me anyway, that 1973 was 52 years ago.

Location was actually Deer Lodge on Yard No.3 track up t'ards W (geographic N) end, directly-across from Yard Office. Switch foreman observing as joint made w/work equipment just added (shovel on flat w/side-dumps for "rip-rap" work along embankments during high-water season). Both EP-4 "Passenger Joes" (#'s E-20 & E-21) had Vapor steam generators installed in "A" cabs and windshields covered-in sheet metal then. Most-of remaining ten EF-4's (#'s E-70 to E-79) had same done when high-speed JR breakers for trolley circuit installed-in same location c.1954-58 (#E-75 was exception, retained original windshields through retirement). Interestingly, when the #E-78 was rebuilt in W Milwaukee following 18-Apr-1966 derailment leading No.263 down past Sixteen the shops installed cab front windshields salvaged-from retired/traded-in NP F-7A's in both ends, then "blanked" the "A" cab ones as had been done previously.

These locomotives were built with two cabs but, during subsequent shopping, electrical equipment was installed in one of the cabs of some (all?) the units.
