There are fewer people and thus eyeballs to watch for thieves. Probably not going to see a reversal in that trend.

Some cargo that is shipped requires the rear door to be open because of the cargo can be explosive if all the doors are closed and thats the way they come off the ships. Onions for example the door ie taken off and left inside the container. It depends on the cargo inside the can. Cattle being shipped to the mainland from Hawaii have lots of slots and holes in them for fresh air for live cattle. Being a dockworker you learn very very fast to give those containers alot of space just in case a angus cow has to take a leak or even worse you know what I mean. You can allways tell when the cows are in port. Some doors are left attatched to the container just secured to the side of the can so it takes less manpower to reconnect.

I watched this very thing happen on live video in Chicago when a stack train was stopped and several locals opened and robbed the contents from one container containing large flat screen TVs. The railroad dicks showed up and the thugs continued to rummage until the local police showed up. Then they all scattered like mice. I think if happens more than one imagines.

As you can see the door is open and connected to the can and secured to a hook that prevents it from swinging or flapping in the wind. And also , not every container is fully loaded. Some containers contain part lots a cheaper way to ship cargo going to the same location. These containers are 53 footers and can only be shipped on the top tiers of the container ships. Most contatner ships only load 40 ft cans below deck as well as twin twenty footers. The crane pickes up two cans at once an loads them aboard. The twin twenty cans loaded on deck mean the longshoremen have double work to do as all corners need to be coned and when the cones are really heavy and tuff twisters and its hot an humid an no cool breeze well you wish you were at your girlfriends having her award winning Spagettie. So.have a nice day !
