Sid, the "G" stands for "grade". That means a train can pass that intermediate signal display "stop" (red) at restricted speed without stopping first.

Sid: The "G" stands for Grade and allows a train to proceed past a red signal without stopping, and perhaps stalling; as opposed to having to make a stop before proceeding at a red block signal.
|
"G" to signify that the signal facing that direction is on an uphill grade, sufficient that if the signal is red, the train does not have to stop - so as to prevent the train from having to stop (and restart) on a grade.

A new one on me, thanks everybody.
