200 years, not 300! Stockton and Darlington Railway, 1825.

Marley Hill shed Tanfield 1725
|
Tanfield railway began in 1725. Originally a waggonway built by mine owners known as the Grand Alliance from their mines in North Durham to staithes on the banks of the river Tyne. Horse drawn waggons were used before the advent of locomotives. This year is the 300th anniversary and there will be celebrations taking place throughout the year, some of which will combine with the 200th anniversary of the Stockton and Darlington railway which was the first PASSENGER carrying railway in 1825. Marley Hill shed was built by the Bowes Railway in 1854 and is the world's oldest. The 1725 waggonway included Causey Arch which was the first ever bridge built to carry rails. It is still in situ and there are plans to reconstruct some of the waggonway and use horses and waggons to demonstrate the scene at that time.
