From p.785 in the April, 1950 Official Guide, Table 1 for the C&EI it appeared that was train ? 2, the afternoon-evening daily coach and parlor accommodation due out of Evansville, Ind.@ 3:30P-CT. An all ?standard heavyweights” express and checked baggage w/RPO-coach combine for ?shorts” behind that then two year-old ?phase III” F-3A/B set in ?as-delivered” blue w/yellow ?cigar band” trim, and the air-conditioned parlor car trailed by a coach. Three years or so earlier and the power would likely have been a pre-USRA K-class #1000-series BLW 4-6-2. It was crossing N 6th St./US ? 41 near E Sycamore St. after departing Vincennes’ Union Station (due out @ 4:46P-CT, 52.6 mi. N/b from its origin) some two blocks to the ESE and seen in Rt.-background behind rear coach.
Station was on SW quadrant of diamond for C&EI/B&O Cincinnati-St. Louis main; S/b interlocking protection provided-by ABS searchlight/?target” signal w/?stand-off” indicator to Rt. beyond S side of N 6th St. It was also a terminus for both NYC’s ?Big Four” CCC&StL 9.7 mi. branch (ibid. p.232, NYC Table 102) from St. Francisville, Ill. on the former’s 369.5 mi. ?Egyptian” Secondary from Indiana Harbor to Cairo, Ill. (ibid. p.209, NYC Table 25.), as-well as PRR’s 117.8 mi. PCC&StL ?Panhandle” line from Indianapolis (ibid. p.347, PRR Table 202). However, while both accessed it over the C&EI seen above, each was ?Freight Service Only” when OCP shot the original photo. This 205.5 mi. portion of the C&EI main from Evansville to Woodland Jct., Ill. was conveyed-to the then-L&N in 1969 ? both it and the former B&O/CS-FL/SS are in-use as part-of CSX.
After a brief pause @ Sullivan (31 mi.N/b, due out @ 5:22P-CT), ? 2 had a two-minute layover @ Terre Haute (another 26.2 mi.N/b, due @ 5:51P-CT) to add a diner. After eight more scheduled stops, including a 7 min. halt @ Danville. Ill.(sched.7:08-7:15P-CT), 54.2 mi.N/b from Terre Haute and 6+hr.s after departure of WAB Detroit-St. Louis ?Cannonballs” ?’s 1 & 4 (ibid. p.255, WAB Table 9), as-well-as w/in 4 hr.s after NYC’s ? 11 W/b ?The Peorian” on their P&E Ry’s 211.4 mi. main from Indianapolis departed (126.4 mi.E/b ibid. p.209, NYC Table 24.), it was due-into Chicago’s Dearborn St. Station (287.3 mi. from Evansville) @ 9:50P-CT. All-in-all not a bad way to travel the Indiana-Illinois borderland on a late June afternoon while contemplating what began just four days earlier half a world away on a peninsula formerly ruled by Imperial Japan and divided between two antagonists in an ongoing Cold War turning ?hot” in what was ?the land of the morning calm.”
