Almost 100 years old...over that time, steam locomotion advanced to its apex and disappeared. Diesel power has changed from a novelty to the standard. Jointed rail has been replaced by welded. TT&TO and telegraph communication has been replaced by CTC and wireless. Passenger trains have gone from the pride of the fleet to a ward of the government.
I can only think it has become a matter of pride to the signal maintainers to keep them working. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
