They were good ones. As many times as I have seen them towed in by freight power I thought Amtrak should have had a separate HEP unit on them as CSX has done with theirs. Fortunately the nightmare scenario of having one of these dead in the Sierras in the winter did not happen. My philosophy is keep a 10% reserve and always carry a spare. Let’s see if those Cummins prime moversshold up as well. More than once in E unit days we limped home with one engine out.

Seeing a locomotive in this state really brings home how tough the elements and years of day-in, day-out service is on these machines. To take on a project that looks like this has got to look almost impossible, yet we have seen so many instances over the years of volunteer groups bringing dinosaurs back from the dead.
