It was going to be extended to Arlington, Lexington and Route 128, or just Arlington Heights, depending which report you read. The NIMBY's in Arlington blocked it, and a reduction in federal funding made the terminus as it is today at Alewife. There's a Wikipedia article called "Red Line (MBTA)" for further reading.
