Hey everybody, have you ever wondererd why the piece of metal was placed in front of the horns on top of the cab. I have wondered for fifty years. Before I die will somebody PLEASE tell me why? Thanks for the info that goes with the photo Bill. I always wonderer about the UP colors on MILWAUKEE passenger trains.

Milwaukee did that to keep objects out of the horn trumpets. Along the Mississippi there can be a lot of bugs, maybe even an occasional bird. But also a lot of loco exhaust if units were in a consist. CNW & CR had a "sock" that they put over the opening of the horn presumably for the same reasons. I have experienced GN's Leslie horns screech as they got buggered up with filth.

The metal was put in front of the horns to keep the bugs out. Thanks for another beauty Bill.
