I would guess it is accelerating with a light load causing heavy draft across the fire grate pulling the embers through. I assume that is fairly common occurrence. I know UP often followed the Challenger with a fire train to deal with the fires caused due to embers. This is 1 of the reasons why the Challenger and Big Boy were converted to oil firing.
