I've noticed in many locations that NS doesn't use guard rails on many of their bridges, including high speed bridges. I wonder if guard rails would have prevented the cars from going over in this incident.

Guard rails especially at low speed would have likely trapped the truck between them. The increase loading on the engine should have been noticeable, possibly allowing the engineer to stop the train in time to avoid this type of accident. I too was very surprised to not see the guide rails.
