Did these units have to be retrofitted with equipment to handle 25 kV AC East of New haven, or were they already compatible? (12.5 kV AC West of New Haven.) If they also have third rail pickups (700 V DC), then they're tri-voltage.

The M8s are designed to run on four different types of electric power: 750 Volt DC with "underrunning" third rail (where the third rail shoes make contact with the bottom of the electrified third rail), 750 Volt DC with "overrunning" third rail (where the third rail shoes make contact with the top of the electrified third rail), 12,500 Volt 60 Hertz AC catenary, and 25,000 Volt 60 Hertz AC catenary. They were designed with SLE service, among other possibilities (LIRR) in mind from the start.

@xBNSFer Who in the NYC area uses overrunning third rail? I wasn't aware of that. (I thought it was all underrunning.) Thanks.

Actually, I see now the LIRR has overrunning with just a little roof to provide safety and maybe some shelter from ice and snow. Never noticed before even though I'm an electrification fan. Learn something new.
