My answer to your question, Mike, is no, definitely not! For me half the fun is just getting out, especially when it’s possible to be part of, and record, a scene like this.

I remember when I left my home near Spokane, WA on Labor Day weekend 1995 to move out of state, I drove through Montana on I-90 to Billings and then headed south. One favorite memory was driving along the Northern Pacific route and seeing these old semaphores still in operation and the code lines still being used to operate them. Another great thing was getting to trace the empty roadbed of the abandoned Milwaukee Road. I was able to recognize several photo locations I had seen in my books and was really neat to see some sections of code line and other trackside features that were still standing. It's a good thing I got to experience that as now many remnants have disappeared by the obscuring of nature and some bridges as well as nearly all the substations have been removed from the landscape, now that it's been 42 years since the Milwaukee left. This image brings back those great memories.
