Such a beautiful locomotive, I never get tired of seeing GS-4's especially from when they were in service. Thanks for showing us.

Nice photo and I agree with the previous comment. If you want to briefly see a GS-3 in action, watch the opening credits of 'The Adventures of Superman' 1952 - 1958 starring George Reeves. When the opening credits state that superman is more powerful than a locomotive, an SP GS-3 is shown in action. The GS-3 is only shown in the black and white version of the series.

A couple interesting things about this photo-- train #99 is in the number boards, which is the northbound Morning Daylight, from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Also, the date of January 8, 1955 would be the day after dieselization of the Coast route. Perhaps this picture was taken after its last scheduled run and return to Los Angeles, or maybe the loco is standing by for backup duty.
