I've heard the term "lift" used in a couple of conversations based on Canadian railroading. "Trains and Locomotives" on RFD-TV aired a program featuring two retired engineers, one each from CN and CP, who described trying to "lift" a train at various times and locations. Could you explain the term "lift" in that context for those of us not familiar with it?
