Not to downplay the situation, but there is a buffer of 20 seconds when the gates go down until the train passes the crossing. I have a friend who does this very thing as he looks up and down the tracks looking for a train. And when he hears or sees nothing then he goes on his way. I am not promoting this idea as it is dangerous, but some people play with their life as if they have nine lives. Stay safe everyone and use your head.

This is stupid, no matter what. I live on the CN Chicago to Canada mainline in Michigan. All three street crossings in town are at an angle. Main Street has rubber crossings. The vast majority of people that live here stop. I have seen a couple people chance it and almost end in disaster. One lady darted around the gates, in pouring rain, with the Blue Water Amtrak coming through. She slid on the rubber, and ended up just missing going off the road and onto the tracks. This was on the same tracks as the Amtrak. I saw her give the Amtrak engineer a honk and finger as if it was Amtrak's fault. She was the only one in the car.
