It's interesting that NS happened to be a merger of two roads that both had lots of SD35s and SD45s; it had about as many SD35+SD45 as it did SD40+SD40-2. And then they were retired quickly, and relatively few of the SD45s and even fewer SD35s found second homes. I guess those retirements were just slightly too late for other Class 1s to be interested and just slightly too early for peak Class 2 demand.
