Must be generational to some extent ... a railroad line just does not look appealing without the code lines and in some cases one cannot even tell there is a track(s) in the distance without those telltale poles, insulators and wires. Even in their states of disrepair they were, as you say, "charming".

Could not agree more with both of your comments. Code line poles were a fascination for me when I rode the L&N as a young boy.
