Normally, I'm not a steam fan but this is a wonderful photo! Love how the smoke leads your eye toward the bridge and remaining part of the train. The black and white if intended ( or just lack of color ) is also awesome . I can only imagine it was a very cold day and you were cold perhaps hiking to the top of a ridge to get the shot? Thanks for posting.

I love the picture but I'm wondering about why a C&O steam engine was operating pulling loaded coal hoppers in 1985.

Hawk's Nest State Park provides an awesome view of the New River Gorge. I love this area in the winter. Fantastic shot.

Thanks for the history lesson Doug, now it all makes sense. I lived in Spencer, NC growing up and remember only steam switchers in the '50s. Even though my grand father was an engineer for the Southern Railway, I never saw him on a steam engine, only diesels. Seeing an active steam freight on the main line in the '80s was an exceptional experience that I envy.
