Nice photo. That's an interesting compound gauge in the upper left corner of the photo. It has three scales and three pointers on it and arranged in a stair type fashion. I've never seen a compound gauge like that before. Thanks for sharing.

Good grief! Is this locomotive hand fired? Is the firebox that small? I cannot imagine doing 100 km relying on the muscles of a human. Since I do not see anything that looks like a throttle to my eyes, I take it the gloved hand is on one of them. I cannot fathom how that handle controls anything. Fascinating.

The 241 A 65 is said to be the largest hand-fired (without stoker) operational steam locomotive in Europe. On French steam locomotives the driver is on the left, the throttle is not visible here on the left side of the boiler and is pulled against itself for opening. The two handles with the large weights belong to the flaps of the firebox doors.
