That cluster of trash cans brings to mind an account in Noel T. Holley's book about the Milwaukee Road under wire. Rotary plow had mystery noise and dark snow ejected at regular intervals, leaving crew quite baffled. Turned out snow had come on or just after city trash pickup day and city plows had unwittingly pushed the buried trash cans over on to the Milwaukee's track. It seemed to have been a normal thing in the narrow space for the city to push the street snow on to the tracks and then Milwaukee's rotary would throw it from there in to the river.
