Why make all that effort to remove the tracks and leave this deck span that would be worth some real money?

Very odd, though likely the ssections on either side were removed to prevent people from walking across. Would've been kind of cool to leave a locomotive or a freight car on that section. It's been done before as seen here in Cimarron, CO.
