What happened to the depot? Hi-Rail had RSD15s as well. How we miss those times and those fragile lines.

I'm not exactly sure where Mr. Dammeman took this photo but very little remains of the former tracks through town. This location may be closer to the center of town; corrections welcomed. Closer to the I-64 and Illinois State Route 1 interchange, all you can see is the "hump" where the right of way used to be. This is a very fine photo and thank you, Mr. Danneman, for sharing it with us.

Jim and Jonathan; Looking at Google Maps’ street view, it looks like the depot was being restored at the time of the street mapping (October 2013), and now has an adjoining picnic pavilion and Illinois Central caboose on display near it. It appears that it is still in its original location as in my photo—near the corner of North and Water Street.

Thank you Mike. The images from Google Maps are good. I love it when you can look at the aerial view and still see where the tracks had been. I'd speculate that some of the train cars in this photo came through Newton, IL on the east-west Illinois Central (this line north of Newton was abandoned in the 80's). My grandparents lived in Newton and I spent lots of summers there as a boy. Listening for the train horn and hopping on my bike to chase, was something I enjoyed a great deal. Thanks for posting this photo.
