APPEARS to be a 4-cycle diesel. Reverse-engineered from ALCO ??

You almost guessed it: It is powered by a Kharkiv 10D100, the successor of 2D100 which was reverse engineered from the Fairbanks-Morse 38 8-1/8, found in FM H-20-44s. As an opposed-piston layout, it can be only a 2-cycle engine.

THANK YOU for the clarification. The opposed-piston Fairbanks-Morse were "tough as nails." We had them on several ships I worked on and they would seemingly "run forever."
